I'm being harassed by debt collectors in relation to a gym membership I cancelled. What should I do?

I'm currently being harassed by a Leisure Company who claim I owe them £256 for outstanding gym membership. I terminated my membership in May 2007 adhering to their cancellation terms and conditions. They have written to me several times and I have responded in writing explaining that I do not owe them anything. I even sent bank statements as proof. Their debt collectors ARC Europe have now resorted to texting me. Please can you advise me on what I need to do?

We get a lot of people complaining about not being able to get out of leisure/gym contracts. We tell them to cancel the direct debit and let them sue. Realistically there is not a lot you can do.

The main tactic of these debt collection agencies is to scare and intimidate you into what you don't need to pay, then to threaten you with Solicitors costs, Bailiffs and Court action - none of which they have the intention or the capability of carrying out.

I am surprised that they are still persisting for such a long time for such a small amount. Eventually they will go away.

We are thinking of introducing Debtshield whereby we write to the debt collection agency and demand in our capacity as Solicitors that they address any communication for any one particular debt to us. They are obliged by law to comply.
